First of all I want to tell you it was my University Senior Project. EXHAUSTED CITY When you start a journey in the streets of Istanbul, one of the best definition comes from the streets themselves. "The city of opposites." A weird city where old and new, rich and poor, solitude and crowd comes together. It is this contradiction which makes Istanbul different, makes us love or hate it. It's a city which experiments, teaches, drives you crazy live 24/7, makes you a warrior when you face with many difficulties, or makes you a philosopher. The people of Istanbul always are in a rush, yet they are always late. Istanbul is the city of getting late. After a really tough day I asked myself “What does the city I live in mean to me?” I started a journey in the streets of Istanbul (city of Turkey) to answer the question in a clear way. I took so many pictures during such journeys and I realized that many definitions on Istanbul originate from the streets. This place is the city of contrasts, difficulties, problems and being late. I decided to present my ideas in a video Project in which I can consider my impressions on Istanbul from my point of view. Because I like video cutting and I believe that I can express the impressions I got in a more effective way in a Project like this. In brief, my Project tells us the contrast between Istanbul being told and the one being experienced being experienced. While I was walking around the streets of Istanbul, I got the impressions about increasing population, slum dwelling problem, unplanned urbanization, clashing cultures and traffic chaos. I collected such impressions under “Exhausted City” heading and I decide to present the contrasts and problems of the city in three different monitors. I planned rough cut in a way that can create differences between the scenes when they are shown in the same scenes but through different monitors. Video Project called “Exhausted City” comprises of 5 episodes. EPISODE 1: Differences between both sides of Istanbul, EPISODE 2: Unplanned urbanization resulting from different social structuring (contrasts between old and new), EPISODE 3: People’s form different cultures living together (variety of human beings), EPISODE 4: Traffic chaos, EPISODE 5: The problems of the city, According to the plan of cutting, I prepared a shooting plan and started shootings on 20 March 2010. I provided the required materials (Sony A1 Camcoder, Manfrotto tripod, M-Audio Microtrack II, back up batteries for Sony A1 Camcoder , Rode NTG2 microphone, Sony A1 Shotgun microphone, XLR adapter, XLR cable, Rode Outdoor set) from Istanbul Bilgi University. I obtained required permits in order to make shootings in some places. I continued shooting until 13 May 2010 I transferred all bands into PC environments and added graphic design, sound, color, credits, and fine cutting like effects. I completed all procedures on 30 May 2010. Later on I started to finish technical matters of the halls of E1 building of Santralistanbul. I provided 3 Plasma TVs and 3 PC cabinets and sound and images from data processing department. When the assemblies were set up, I repeatedly tested video Project and tried to minimize technical breakdowns. I designed brochures, posters and flyers about my Project and had them printed. I completed all procedures regarding my Project on 6 June 2010. You can watch my Video Project: https://vimeo.com/12624326
